Merlion statue with water喷泉 in front of modern skyscrapers

About The Merlion: Singapore’s Iconic Symbol

The Merlion is Singapore’s most beloved national symbol. This mythical creature, with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, captures the spirit of the city-state.

The fish tail represents Singapore’s origins as a humble fishing village (historically known as Temasek - meaning "sea town" in Javanese), while the lion’s head alludes to its ancient name, Singapura—“lion city.”

It was so named by a Sumatran Prince, who, according to legend, spotted a lion upon landing on this island at the turn of the 14th century.

The original Merlion statue, created by sculptor Lim Nang Seng and unveiled in 1972, now stands proudly at Merlion Park, overlooking Marina Bay, spouting water into the skyline. It remains one of Singapore’s most beloved landmarks and a timeless emblem of the city.

Merlion Decorations are for life, not just for Christmas

Although Christmas Merlions were originally created as Christmas ornaments, they’ve far outgrown that purpose. Our brand name doesn’t quite capture what the decorations have become.

Merlions can be displayed anywhere, at any time, in any setting.

They’re truly perennial.
